Another big day in the bakery is Wednesday, “Pastie Day”.
“Finnish Pasties” are a well known item here in Michigan originating in the Upper Peninsula. Our recipe is one of the owners family recipe made by Irma Aittama in Calumet, Michigan for her family. She passed her recipe along to us and with our potatoes, carrots and onion we add the rutabaga to make our authentic “Finnish Pasties” made only on Wednesday. We start making them at 6 am and by 9 am the beef pasties start coming our of the oven, followed by the vegetarian (cheese with the vegetables in place of the meat) and turkey pasties next.
Ours are fully baked and only need to be warmed to have a
hearty meal or can be frozen and heated at a later date. At 1 lb. each they
are quite a meal.
